The Open Group and GMG to Collaborate on Industry Standards

Memorandum of Understanding to identify digital use cases and areas of strategic overlap in the mining industry

San Francisco, California/ Ormstown, Quebec, Canada 鈥 March 19, 2025:  The Open Group, the vendor-neutral technology consortium, and Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) today announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will foster collaboration between GMG members in the mining industry and the OSDU for Mining initiative.

The Open Group regularly collaborates with peer organizations that want to be an integral part in developing related or complementary standards and technical specifications. Both parties are entering into this agreement to provide subject matter experts with a better understanding of the areas of strategic overlap, as well as the digital data use cases that benefit from the distinctive strengths of each organization.

Jim Hietala, Vice President, Sustainability and Market Development, The Open Group, said: "The Open Group is proud to partner with GMG to bring the benefits of the OSDU庐 Data Platform to the mining industry. This important cross-organization collaboration will help the industry to accelerate much needed digital transformation by leveraging the significant work that has been put into building the  platform.鈥

The Open Group has two Forums that are relevant for GMG members. The first is The Open Group OSDU庐 Forum, which delivers an open source, standards-based, technology- agnostic data platform for the energy industry. Within this, the OSDU for Mining platform brings the benefits of the standards-based OSDU platform including interoperability, enhanced data discovery, and development of a competitive applications environment on top of the core platform to the mining industry. The second Forum is The Open Group Open Footprint庐 Forum, which focuses on the development of open and vendor-neutral industry standards to provide consistent and accurate measurement and reporting of environmental footprint data.

Heather Ednie, CEO of GMG, added: "This collaboration is a significant one for the mining industry. The combination of the OSDU Data Platform with our industry guidelines will enhance data interoperability and provide a robust foundation for future advancements in our sector. We are excited about the potential this partnership holds for creating a more efficient, sustainable, and technologically advanced mining sector.鈥

The Open Group vision is to enable the achievement of business objectives through the development of technology standards, enabling global interoperability and Boundaryless Information Flow鈩 in a secure, reliable, and timely manner. The GMG has significantly contributed to mining data standards and best practices, particularly through the "Data and Interoperability" working group, with a key focus on developing the Open Mining Format (OMF) to facilitate data exchange between different mining software platforms.
